Out of the Picture and Into the Picture (OPIP), ISBN 9780976800460 by Victor G. La Van Way and Ilyan Kei Lavanway is a fantasy action adventure book containing two short stories about a pilot who is miraculously reunited with his father in a strange storm. The book tells of the pilot’s adventures on his journey home.
The first short story in this book is titled Out of the Picture by Victor G. La Van Way, my dad. Some years back, my dad painted a picture inspired by an actual experience I had while flying an airplane home to Washington State. I was flying a Piper Arrow PA28R-200 home during my freshman year of college in Prescott, Arizona. It was Christmas break, December of 1985. The account in this short story is, of course, fictionalized for dramatic effect, and features a De Havilland Beaver DHC-2 in place of the Piper Arrow.
I have never flown a De Havilland Beaver, but I have certainly daydreamed about doing so. It is my kind of airplane. Rugged, beefy, macho, exuding testosterone and a go anywhere, do anything attitude underpinned by a love of liberty and freedom. Definitely a man’s airplane. Writing fiction, particularly short stories, is a great way to capture, express, and combine real and imagined experiences. Rather than pine away about the things I wish I could do but cannot at present afford to do, I decided to write about them and share them through publishing.
My dad asked me to write a sequel to his short story. My sequel is titled Into the Picture. My dad’s painting of the De Havilland Beaver being overtaken by bad weather is the foundation for the plot of my sequel. My stepmother’s painting of the forest scene is the inspiration for the setting of Into the Picture.
My dad’s painting of the airplane is featured on the back cover of the book, Out of the Picture and Into the Picture. My stepmother’s painting of the path in the woods is featured on the front cover. This book is currently available as an eBook on amazon kindle. Look for the printed edition to be released in the summer of 2012.
